The CCC "Gunks Outing" that took place on Sat, Sun
July 14-15, 2007 was a lot of fun and well attended. We owe a big thanks to Henning Grentz, who
essentially acted as host. Remember,
the CCC Gunks Outing is not a guided trip, it's a friendly gathering where
members climb together.
You are responsible for your own safety! Climbing is dangerous! Make sure that you trust your
climbing partners and make sure that they know how to climb safely!
Anyway (sorry for the lecture), the event was fun! Henning was there to greet fellow climbers at 8:30 am each day, and we spent Sat climbing in the 'Far Nears' (the far end of the near Trapps) and Sun climbing in Peterskill. Despite beautiful weather Sat. and a little rain on Sunday, the Gunks weren't crowded, and for a pretty big group of 20 or more, we didn't seem to get in too many people's way. We hope it was a good experience for all! Here's a few more details and pictures: Henning preaching safety to members:
Oh, and some of us were attacked by chiggers. These dreaded, nearly invisible mites are abundant this year and hang out by trees and grassy ledges. Chigger bites, 2 days later:
Some Highlights of routes climbed by members: Near Traps: "Honky Tonk Woman" - 5.9 R. Really cool face climbing, hard to protect it.
Get some "White Pillar" - (pictured) 5.7, PG-R, a cool chimney next to Honky Tonk. Dark, oooooooow!
"Hang Ten" - 10a, this climb is easier if you know how to climb it. A big roof. "Giddah" - 5.6, this is an excellent 5.6, though short. Tricky to figure the crux. We also top-roped Moxie and there was some talk about what "moxie" really means. Williams Wall, Near Trapps "AKidllEatIvyTooWouldntYou?" - 5.5, Nice face climb, or did we actually climb Punch and Judy? Not so many young folks know of this ridiculous song. "Far from the Maddening Crowd" - 5.8, Neat face climb with a small roof thingy to overcome. Gear is a little sparse over here. Peterskill, TerrorDome: "Portrait of the Artist" - 5.8+, great rock, climb. Too short. "Nutmaster" - 5.8+, similar to previous route, but has different name. Williams wall, I think (pictured)
